The Histiocytosis Association is honored to provide an educational scholarship program for those impacted by histiocytic disorders in the United States. The inaugural launch of the program in 2019 provided (3) $500 scholarships - (1) NJ/PA/NY/DE regional award, funded by a local grant, and (2) national awards, personally funded by the Histiocytosis Association Board of Trustees and Staff. The Histio Community welcomed this new program with great enthusiasm, which has enabled us to continue to offer and grow the scholarship opportunities.

The Student Scholarship Program celebrates the many advances in patient treatments that are now making it possible for child Histio Warriors to step into that next phase of life and chase their dreams as college students.

We are excited to announce the following student scholarship opportunities for the 2020-2021 academic year:

  • (2) Histio Warrior Student Scholarships
    • The top-ranked Histio Warrior scholarship application will receive our highest valued award. The exact amount will be announced after April 27 and determined based on 10% of the donation proceeds of the Histiocytosis Association’s Histio Hike Shenandoah event awarded in honor of the event’s highest fundraising team for 2020. Based on previous Histio Hikes, this amount could be $5,000 or more! Learn more and register to participate in this year's Histio Hike Shenandoah (in-person or virtually) at histiohikeshenandoah.org.
    • The second-ranked Histio Warrior scholarship application will receive a $1,000 award.
    • A Histio Warrior is someone who has been diagnosed with a histiocytic disorder.
  • (1) Family Member Scholarship: A $1,000 student scholarship will be awarded to a sibling, child, or grandchild of a Histio Warrior.

Awarded scholarships will be split between the Fall and Spring semesters for the upcoming academic year and will be disbursed directly to the college/university upon verification of enrollment. We hope to continue to expand upon this program in the future. If you are interested in contributing to ensure this program can continue for many years to come, please contact Heather at scholarships@histio.org or donate here (All funds donated will go towards ensuring the availability of future scholarships).

Application Process

There are (2) parts to the application process, which must be completed by: April 19, 2020

Part 1: Complete the online application form.

Application includes the following essay questions:

  • Tell us about you and your histio journey. Write an essay not exceeding 1,000 words (approximately 2 single-space pages) describing your journey with histiocytosis. Consider the obstacles you have overcome, how histio has shaped your life, how it has affected your family, and explain what your future goals include. Finally, answer this question: If you could say anything to the people who have provided support for the search for better treatments and a cure, what would you say?

  • Propose a unique awareness or fundraising idea. In no more than 1,000 words (approximately 2 single-space pages) provide a detailed proposal for an awareness or fundraising opportunity that would be beneficial for the Histiocytosis Association and that you would be willing to coordinate (with the help and support of our staff and financial resources) in the Fall 2020 semester. This can be an activity on your college campus, off-campus, or potentially online. Consider timing, location, target audience, materials and supplies needed, potential expenses/budget, benefits of the event, volunteers, impact, and return on investment in regards to the potential number of people we could teach about histio or financial proceeds.  We encourage you to think outside the box and get creative; however, the event must be plausible!

Part 2: Email the following required documentation to scholarships@histio.org:

  • a good quality front-facing photo
  • proof of residency
  • proof of GPA/transcripts

Verification of enrollment will be required before funds are disbursed. Funds will be disbursed during the billing cycle established by the individual college/university’s guidelines. Disbursement of funds for the Spring semester will be contingent upon meeting the requirements for the Fall 2020 semester: maintaining a 3.0 GPA and completion of the agreed-upon awareness or fundraising event as outlined in the scholarship acceptance agreement.

Histio Warrior Scholarships: A Histio Warrior is someone who has been diagnosed with a histiocytic disorder. Histio Warriors do not need to apply separately for the two Histio Warrior Student Scholarships – all eligible applicants will be considered for both award amounts through one application form. Histio Warriors do not need to currently be in treatment for consideration for any of the scholarships. A letter from your doctor may be required as confirmation of diagnosis.

Family Member Scholarship: A Histio Warrior is someone who has been diagnosed with a histiocytic disorder. Eligible family members include a sibling, child, or grandchild of a Histio Warrior. Histio Warriors do not need to currently be in treatment for consideration for any of the scholarships. A letter from your doctor may be required as confirmation of diagnosis.

Selection Process: Confirmation of application will be provided by email upon receipt of both parts of the application. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of individuals with an educational background chosen by the Histiocytosis Association and scored through a blind and non-bias review grading process. Applicants will be notified of the decision in early May. Applicants will be notified of the decision approximately 4 weeks after the application deadline via email. The scholarship recipients will be chosen based primarily on the answers provided in the essays of the application in relation to how it complements the mission of the Histiocytosis Association.

Maintaining the Scholarship: Scholarship recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA and complete the agreed-upon awareness or fundraising event as outlined in the scholarship acceptance agreement. A mid-semester check-in will be scheduled in the Fall semester to help ensure the best possible outcome for the students and address any potential concerns with meeting requirements at that time.

Appeals Process: If an awardee is unable to fulfill the requirements of the Fall semester, they may contact scholarships@histio.org for details regarding how they can appeal or make additional arrangements to fulfill the requirement.

Current paid employees of the Histiocytosis Association and their families are not eligible. The Histiocytosis Association is not responsible for funds once disbursed to a college/university/institution.
